Let’s Get Clear on the Facts About Fertility

There are SO MANY (too many) myths out there when it comes to fertility. I’m All About Sharing Facts About Fertility – so you know what’s worth your time and effort and what you can totally ignore.

Here’s what happens with most of my clients. They pour a ton of money, time, energy, and internet searching into chasing down anything they can find about fertility – what improves it, what hurts it, and what matters. They want to know it all!

I love a good internet search, but you’ve gotta be careful and picky when it comes to what you find, read, and believe about fertility. There’s so much misinformation out there that it makes my freaking head spin.

And you don’t have time to waste with unhelpful, pointless, and sometimes even harmful ideas, approaches, and advice. So let’s clear the air, shall we? 

Myth #1: The “No Bleed” Ovulation

This is not a thing. 

There are two options in the 16 days after ovulation: a period bleed OR a pregnancy. That’s it.

I’ve worked with clients who had doctors (yes, actual medical doctors) tell them that they are ovulating, it’s just a “no bleed” ovulation. 

You will ovulate before you get a period, but the outcome after a real egg release is going to either be a menstrual bleed or a positive pregnancy test. If neither of those things happens, you didn’t ovulate on that day.

If you don’t take anything else away from this post, please know that there is no such thing as a no-bleed ovulation. And anyone else who tells you differently is terribly misinformed.

Myth #2: Irregular Periods are Normal

This one requires a bit of nuance to unpack. We need to get clear on what we mean when we say “irregular.” 

If your cycle fluctuates by a couple of days each month, that is normal. 

If your cycle moves from 27 days to 50 days to 42 days… that is not normal.

Myth #3: Dysfunction in Fertility is Infertility

Fertility dysfunction – dysfertility or subfertility – can lengthen the time it takes for you to conceive.

Infertility, on the other hand, means being incapable of achieving pregnancy. 

Most of the clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with have a diagnosis of infertility but when we actually look a little deeper we find that it’s actually dysfertility with ovulation issues.

Here are some common causes of dysfertility in the body:

  • Poor gut health
  • Crappy thyroid function
  • Genetic predispositions
  • Toxin exposure
  • Chronic physical and mental stress
  • Poor diet
  • Nutrient deficiency
  • Chronic inflammation

And all of the above issues can be supported to help get your fertility back on track!

There are true cases of infertility where a natural pregnancy is just not possible. But it’s less common than you think.

Myth #4: Ovulating With Medication is the Same as Ovulating Naturally

Unfortunately, no.

Ovulation is important for conception but also a marker of overall health for women in their childbearing years. Consistent ovulation each cycle has been shown to reduce rates of gynecological cancer, depression, and osteoporosis (PMID: 33986956,  26726266, 27190045)

Remember, health comes first and fertility comes second. As much as I’d love to, we can’t leapfrog over it.

If you want to conceive – naturally or through IUI or IVF – you’re chances of success can be improved when your own hormone flow is in check and that includes regular ovulation.

And the good news is there are so many things we can do to support ovulation naturally!

Yes, medication can help. And sometimes it’s the best option. But getting your body in a position to ovulate on its own is more effective and overall healthier for your body and mind in the long term.
